PUNE: Lt Gen S K Kaul, a well-known cardio-thoracic surgeon, has been appointed Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) here.
He replaces Lt Gen Saibal Mukherjee, who takes charge as Director General Medical Services (Army), an official release said.
Lt Gen Kaul, a graduate from the Srinagar Medical College, was commissioned into the Indian Army in August 1969. He passed MS (General Surgery) and MCh (Cardio-thoracic Surgery) from University of Pune in 1977 and 1985 respectively and was awarded 'FIACS' in 1991.
He served in Kargil as an anaesthesiologist during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War and was a general surgeon in Nagaland in the late 1970s.
He held various prestigious positions including those of professor and the Head of Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at MH (CTC) and AFMC in Pune from 1998-2002, Commandant of Military Hospital, Namkum (Ranchi), Commandant of Command Hospital (Western Command), Deputy Director Medical Services, Headquarters Western Command, and Senior Consultant (Surgery) in the office of DG, AFMS.
Lt Gen Kaul is credited to have started an open-heart surgery centre at Army Hospital, Delhi Cantonment in 1992. He is a recognised post graduate teacher and examiner in cardiothoracic surgery at Pune University and MUHS, Nashik.
He was awarded Vishist Seva Medal in 1998 and the GOC-in-C (Western Command) Commendation Card in 2005 for meritorious service, the release added.
