LPG subsidies for BPL families soon: Sheila
While Dikshit didn’t reveal the timeline for the launch of the scheme, the announcement comes in the run-up year to the civic polls scheduled for next year, said political observers.
Dikshit, who was speaking at a health camp organized by the DC (revenue) northeast district and the health department, said the government will replace kerosene oil stoves with LPG and provide further subsidies through banks to families falling in the BPL (below poverty line) category.
The idea behind the scheme is to do away with the profiteering and adulteration in kerosene oil rampant in the city. While Dikshit didn’t reveal the timeline for the launch of the scheme, the announcement comes in the run-up year to the civic polls scheduled for next year, said political observers.
As part of the scheme announced by the Centre, direct cash will be given to BPL families if they switch over from kerosene to LPG as cooking fuel. The scheme, say government officials, will ensure that the subsidy reaches the actual beneficiaries.
As per the scheme devised by the centre, the government may extend a cash subsidy of Rs 250 to each BPL family per LPG cylinder against the market price of Rs 310, besides providing the gas stove free of cost.
Concerned over misuse of subsidies provided under various schemes, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had in his budget speech last week announced that the government will provide a direct cash subsidy on kerosene and fertilizers to the poor from March next year.
