KOHIMA: The Forest Department of Nagaland has been providing cooking gas connections to villagers to stop deforestation in the state.

Talking to media-persons on the side-line of Earth Day celebration here today, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Nagaland, C L Goel said, "To discourage usage of firewood, which has been leading to massive deforestation, villagers in the state are being provided with LPG connections."

However, he said that there are problems of distribution of gas cylinders by the dealers because of the remoteness of the villages.

Minister of Forest, Ecology, Environment and Wildlife, Y Patton said the problem of distribution would be solved by opening more LPG distribution centre.

Now only one distribution station at Dimapur caters to the entire state. Government has approved setting up of two more LPG distribution centres for the state.
