Lokpal bill will not end corruption, lacks many things: Mulayam Singh
Speaking after the post-lunch in In Parliament, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said that the government's Lokpal bill suits them, not the people.
Mulayam adds that democracy is bigger than the Lokpal bill. "Lokpal bill will not end corruption. Bill lacks so many things. Democracy is bigger than the Lokpal. Parliament represents the aspirations of people. Nothing can be above it. MPs fear people. Because they get elected by them," Yadav said. "The accusations made against the CBI can also be made against the Lokpal. This Lok Pal Bill is not good enough," he added.
Earlier, The BJP punched holes in the government's Lokpal bill saying it was anything but a strong and effective law to deal with corruption in the country. "It is patently unconstitutional (bill)... deeply flawed and tampers with the basics of our constitution," Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj told the Lok Sabha, initiating the debate on the Lokpal bill which was introduced in the house last week.
Leading the government's defence of the Lokpal bill, telecom minister Kapil Sibal accused the BJP of not being keen on getting the Lokpal bill passed. "It is a political conspiracy. The BJP does not want the Lokpal bill to be cleared," Sibal said. Sibal further said, "If the Bill is passed, it will be a historical moment, but if it is delayed, people won't forgive the ones interrupting." "If you do not let this Bill pass, the nation will never forgive you," Sibal said.
