NEW DELHI: Members in Lok Sabha today pitched for tackling climate change, providing quality education and managing population effectively as they listed out a series of reasons for failure to achieve the targets set under the Millennium Development Goal.

Participating in a debate on Sustainable Development Goal, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank ( BJP) highlighted the need for protecting and conserving forests and glaciers.

He said the goal should be set in such a manner that those who are affected by natural calamity should be rehabilitated in a time-bound fashion.

The former Uttarakhand Chief Minister demanded setting up of a committee to investigate alleged financial irregularities in the relief provided in the aftermath of flash flood in Kedarnath two years ago.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising FDI cap in various sectors, he said there was a time when countries avoided dealing with India but now they are more than willing to do business with the country.

TDP MP Jayadev Galla said the deadline for meeting the targets of MDG is fast approaching and the country has been able to achieve only 4-5 targets.

Emphasising on the need for quality education, he said although the number of students in primary education is 88 per cent and students completing education till class V is 93 per cent, it lacked quality.

AIADMK MP Vijayakumar said Tamil Nadu had already drawn up Vision 2023 under which critical bottlenecks for developments have been identified.

Drawing the attention of rising population, BJP MP from Madhya Pradesh Pralhad Singh Patel emphasised on a uniform civil code to deal with the issue.

He also said that to achieve sustainable development, it was not necessary to replicate other nations but to work on how to manage the huge population in the future for sustainable development.
