The Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha will hold their maiden sittings in the new Parliament building from Tuesday. While the Lok Sabha is slated to begin at 1:15 pm, the Rajya Sabha will commence from 2:15 pm.

According to sources, the Parliament session will move to the new building after a joint sitting of both the Houses in the Central Hall of Parliament on Tuesday morning to mark the farewell to the old building.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, presiding officers of both the Houses, ministers and MPs from across the parties will be present during the joint sitting.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, the prime minister, Speaker Om Birla, leader of the Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal, leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikargun Kharge and Congress floor leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury will speak on the occasion. Some senior parliamentarians could also be invited to speak during the joint sitting.

Opposition Meeting

A meeting of the floor leaders of the INDIA bloc parties on Monday morning decided to participate in the ceremonial sittings. They decided to wait for bills to make their stand clear. While the meeting reiterated the opposition to the CEC and other ECs appointment bill, according to some participants, Congress' Manish Tewari told the meeting that CJI's omission from the CEC selection panel need not be opposed given the principle of the division of power between the executive and judiciary. Not many appeared agreeing with him as some MPs later pointed out that CJI is part of many other selection panels, including the one to appoint the CBI chief.
