Lok Sabha polls 2014: New government should honour pacts, says Pakistan high commissioner Abdul Basit
Pakistan is expecting the new Indian govt to honour all the agreements signed by its predecessor, Abdul Basit, Pakistan's high commissioner to India, has told ET.

Basit said the elections are being closely watched by the government as well as the people of Pakistan. He said his country is keen to make a new beginning by weeding out terrorism but added that it cannot guarantee there will be no terror attacks.
"Pakistan is eagerly waiting to see a new government take over in India," the high commissioner said. "The government of Pakistan is watching the political process in India with high degree of interest and feels that whichever government comes to power, should honour all previous agreements between the two countries." Basit said the elections in India have generated a very high degree of interest among the people of his country. "Everybody in Pakistan is wanting to know what will happen on May 16. " "Our bilateral discourse should not be dominated by negativity. We feel that if the talks start, they should be launched without any pre-conditions," he said.
Asked about what would be his government's reaction if a Narendra Modi-led NDA government assumed power in Delhi, Basit said: "At this stage, we are not sure who will form the government and we would not like to jump the gun by commenting on any political party."
