Speaker Sumitra Mahajan recalled the bombings that took place 71 years ago on August 6 and 9 and paid tributes to the lakhs of people who were killed, wounded and maimed for life.
She said India believes in a world order where peace and unity are paramount.
A delegation from the Japanese embassy here were present in the visitors' gallery when the reference to the bombings was made. The members of the delegation also stood in silence for a few minutes along with members of the House in memory of the victims.
Those in the press gallery as well as the visitors' and Speaker's galleries stand only when the National Anthem or the National Song are played at the beginning and end of sessions.
Since Parliament does not usually meet on Saturdays, the reference was made today.
The House also wished success and happy medal hunting to the Indian contingent participating the Rio Olympics beginning today.
