MUMBAI: Several parts of Maharashtra may continue to be in lockdown even after the end of the third phase of the restrictions on May 17, as the state has yet to see any respite from the Covid-19 outbreak.

The state government is not inclined to allow public transport such as suburban trains and buses to resume in Mumbai and Pune till the spread of the disease is brought under control, people in the know told ET.

While they don’t expect lifting of the lockdown before the arrival of monsoon, there is also pressure within the government to allow some kind of relaxations even within Mumbai and other affected regions.

ET spoke to several government officials who said unless there was a dramatic improvement in the situation by end-May, suburban trains and public transport buses in Mumbai would not run till the second week of June.
