Load shedding extended by 1-3 hours across state

MUMBAI: The dry spell in Maharashtra is leading to longer hours of power cuts as well. Beginning Saturday, people in the state, barring Greater Mumbai, will have to face load shedding for another one to three hours every day.

In A category cities, load shedding will be extended to 2.45 hours from 1.45 hours, while in B, C and D category towns it will be extended by one hour. In agriculture-dominated areas, load shedding will be extended by 2-3 hours.

Explaining the decision to increase load shedding by an hour, a spokesman for the state power distribution company Maha Discom said the situation is quite critical as some of the major dams which supply water to power projects have water for only 36 to 120 days. He said the revised time table for power cuts will be effective from Friday midnight.

Maha Discom does not supply power to Greater Mumbai, which is serviced by BEST, RInfra, and Tata.

The utility was also finding it difficult to cope with a spurt in demand from 11500 mw in the last week of July to 15000 mw on August 20. Last year, the maximum demand in August was 11893 mw, of which Maha Discom could provide only 8753 mw. This year, though the supply has gone up to 11300 mw, the demand has zoomed to 15000 mw, creating a shortfall of 3700 mw.

Maha Discom is finding it difficult to maintain the supply at 10000 mw-11000 mw also. Major thermal power stations like Chandrapur, Parali and Paras have water available for 36, 90, and 120 days, respectively. Maha Discom has already exhausted 25% of the total annual quota of water allocated for the Koyna plant, the spokesperson said.
