Lifting of coronavirus lockdown: The possible scenarios

The 21-day lockodwn announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 which came into effect from March 25 will end on April 14. The Cabinet secretary had made it clear that there are no plans to extend it. However, an exit strategy is needed for a smooth end to the lockdown period.

The Prime Minister, in his interaction with the chief ministers, had talked about a staggered exit. Reports suggest that there won't be a blanket withdrawal. Instead, a calibrated approach could be considered with those areas or cities that are Covid hostpots remaining under lockdown.

Authorities in Wuhan have asked its residents to stay indoors just days after a nine-week lockdown was lifted. The public transport was partially restored and there was limited movement on roads. However, fearing a second pahse the residents have been asked to avoid any non-essential travel.

In Panama and Peru, the authorites have imposed a gender-based restrictions with either males or females allowed to go out on each day. Authorities feel this would halve the number of people out on the roads.
