Life in Darjeeling returns to normal
Life was back to normal in Darjeeling Hills this morning after the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, suspended its indefinite bandh till July 5.
All shops and markets, banks as well as state and central government offices were open as vehicles moved freely on the roads.
There was an all-round sense of relief in the Dooars area where tea gardens and cinchona plantations were to have been under the purview of the bandh which was scheduled to restart from six am today.
Yesterday GJM chief Bimal Gurung had announced that his organisation would decide on June 27 whether to resume the bandh on July six or to devise some other strategy to move ahead with their demand for a separate state.
Last evening there was a flutter after a hand-written poster in Nepali appeared at Chalk Bazar in Darjeeling town which said, "Bandh Bvlayera Kin Khilari Khilari Chha? Hamro Balidan Ki Esto Mamuna? (What bandh-game you are playing? Is it the return of our sacrifice?)"
The poster had appeared in the name of the Janta (masses).
GJM supporters immediately removed the poster and managed the situation as hunders of locals demanded that the GJM leadership find out the person or group responsible for its display and teach them a good lesson.
