LeT team headed for BSE nabbed
Uttar Pradesh’s Special Task Force has busted a major Laskar-e-Taiba module in Bareily and arrested six terrorists.
According to Uttar Pradesh police, the arrested militants included two from Pakistan. The STF officials claimed that they found passports, maps of Mumbai and railway tickets to Mumbai on those six men. Reports from Lucknow said two AK-47s, hand grenades, RDX and a pistol were found from the possession of the terrorists during the arrest.
The militants were alleged to be behind the suicide attack on a CRPF camp in Rampur and the attack on IISC in Bangalore two years ago.
Last week, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan had met Mr Advani to share with him the reports of intelligence agencies about jihadi groups planing to attack the political leadership. Mr Advani is believed to be on the hit-list of Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami or Huji, the group that carried out explosions in Hyderabad and Uttar Pradesh last year.
Reports with the IB pointed to the role of Huji commander Maulvi Abdul Kasim and Mufti Bhakhtiyar in this operation. The police said the arrested team was planning to leave the town for Mumbai when they were nabbed.
Three of the LeT militants Suhail and Arshad Ali alias Baba, both residents of UP, and Fayheem, a Pakistani national were arrested from a state roadways bus in Rampur when they were readying to go to Mumbai. Sallahuddin, a resident of Madhubani in Bihar, and Imran and Farooq, both from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were nabbed in Lucknow when they were trying to leave the city. Sallahuddin was allegedly the mastermind of the attack on the CRPF camp in Rampur on New Years Day.
The busting of the terror module confirms fears of the government about terror groups using SIMI infrastructure. The governments statistics suggest an overwhelming terrorist presence in the state. In the last three years, the police have neutralised more than 80 modules in the state. The Jaish-e-Mohammad, Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami, Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar have widened their network in UP.
