Left, TDP firm up alliance
With BSP chief Mayawati giving the cold shoulder to a pre-poll alliance, the Left and TDP on Thursday decided to go ahead with their plans to formalise an “electoral alternative” to the BJP and Congress.
AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaas message that she was prepared for being part of an alternative to alliances led by the BJP and Congress, has given boost to the Left and TDP. Left sources said they were hopeful of other forces joining the group.
These parties, which had also hoped on roping in the BSP into their proposed alternative, decided that they should go ahead with their plans to put up a front ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Ms Mayawati has not indicated any keenness on aligning with such an electoral alternative at least in the pre-poll scenario.
That the BSP was not going to play ball on pre-poll understanding with the Left was clear from the recent assembly elections. The CPM itself is aware that it lost its lone sitting seat in Madhya PradeshSirmaurbecause of BSP. The Left would be content to hear Ms Mayawati declaring that she would take an anti-Congress and anti-BJP stand in the elections, but she has not even pledged that as yet.
The Left, as well as its allies for the proposed electoral alternative, are now banking on a post-poll alliance with BSP. The Mayawati-led partys performance in the recent assembly elections in states, where bi-polar politics has dominated the scene, is being seen by the Left as a reflection of the peoples verdict against the BJP and Congress.
