Left awaiting Pranab's response

Left parties are awaiting a response from External Affair Minister Pranab Mukherjee on their letter setting a deadline of July 7 for the UPA govt to clarify whether it is going to the IAEA.

KOLKATA: Left parties are awaiting a response from External Affair Minister Pranab Mukherjee on their letter setting a deadline of July seven for the UPA government to clarify whether it is going to the IAEA, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said today.

"We have sent a letter to Pranab Mukherjee yesterday and we are waiting for his reply," Karat said before meeting CPI-M patriarch Jyoti Basu at his Salt Lake residence here.

Karat along with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and CPI(M) state Secretary Biman Bose were closetted with Basu for 45 minutes.

They apprised him of latest developments on the UPA-Left stand-off on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, party sources said.

After the meeting, none of the leaders spoke to the press.

Karat is here to attend the birth centenary of parliamentarian late Hiren Mukherjee.
