Left arms itself against Israel

The Left, which has brought the NCP and RJD to share its anti-Israel position, will launch a signature campaign by MPs to demand snapping of military collaboration with Tel Aviv.

NEW DELHI: The Left, which has brought the NCP and RJD to share its anti-Israel position, will launch a signature campaign by MPs to demand snapping of military collaboration with Tel Aviv.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat, who announced the plans for building up opinion inside Parliament, said the parties who have joined the Lefts project would demand an end to arms trade between India and Israel.

Besides this, these parties will also step up pressure for denying business contracts to companies involved in the occupation regime of West Bank and Gaza.

The parties, which met under the umbrella of All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation Committee for Independent Foreign Policy, accused India of supporting Israeli apartheid.

Mr Karat, while referring to external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjees statement on Israel, said it was time to compel the government to face the situation following the worst Israeli invasion on Gaza and West Bank and change its policy on Israel.

The external affairs ministers statement on foreign policy referred to Palestine. But, anybody who reads it would think there has been an earthquake there. Israel was not mentioned.... The root cause of the suffering and misery of the Palestinian people is Israel, Mr Karat said.

He said the signature campaign by MPs to demand cutting off military collaboration with Israel should coincide with a campaign outside Parliament.

He also reiterated reservations about India allowing launch of an Israeli satellite and said it was no ordinary satellite but a part of a security agreement between the two countries. The depth of collaboration with Israel has reached new heights, he said.
