Leave city names alone, educate the poor: Murthy

Infosys founder and chief mentor NR Naryanamurthy on Tuesday decried the tendency of re-naming cities.

BANGALORE: Infosys founder and chief mentor NR Naryanamurthy on Tuesday decried the tendency of re-naming cities.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the company’s extra-ordinary general meeting (EGM), Mr Murthy said: ”As a Kannadiga, we call Bangalore as Bengalooru. So, it doesn’t make a difference. This thing (re-naming) doesn’t enthuse or need a debate. We must instead look at ensuring safety of our children, ensure the poor are able to have access to good quality education and provide healthcare to our citizens.”

It may be recalled that as part of its ‘Suvarna Karnataka’ celebrations the state administration has proposed to rename nine cities. The cities whose names would be changed from the existing anglicised form include Bangalore, Mysore, Belgaum, besides Hubli.

Mr Murthy, who is the chairperson of the state’s vision group on the IT sector, said neither the government nor the incumbent IT secretary had broached him the issue of what needed to be done to make Karnataka and Bangalore the IT hub of the country. “I know that Anup Pujari (the former IT secretary) is on deputation to the Union government.“

Mr Murthy — who was till recently the chairman of Infosys — said post retirement he had been having an extremely busy schedule. “I have been only able to spend about 6-7 days in Bangalore during the past 70 days or so,” he let on.
