Leader of Opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly seeks clarity on convening winter session

Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia on Monday dashed letter assembly speaker, Hitendra Nath Goswami seeking clarity on convening the winter session of state assembly.

Saikia in a letter stated, “I take the liberty of bringing to your attention the fact that the Winter Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly has now become a matter of speculation in as much as doubts are arising as to whether it would be convened at all and, if convened, when that fortunate hour will come.”

He added, “As we know, Sir, you have a grounding in law and as such, perfectly aware of the importance of precedents and tradition when it comes to matters pertaining to Parliamentary democracy. It is , consequently, most unfortunate that the post-independence tradition of convening a Winter Session of the State Assembly to discuss various important issues before the Budget Session is being ignored at a time when you are the custodian of the august House”.


Saikia further said, “Our misgivings have been accentuated by the fact that a similar process of neglect and delay is taking place with regard to the Winter Session of Parliament. Many of us who are in the Opposition are inclined to believe that it is not mere coincidence that the blatant disregard of Parliamentary tradition is taking place at a time when the BJP is in power in State. There seems to be a design to undermine the very foundations of our democratic ethos.I feel that it is, therefore, incumbent upon you, considering your stature across party lines, to ensure that the Winter Session of the Assam Assembly is held forthwith.”
