Laxman and Dravid weaved a good second wicket partnership after opener Wasim Jaffer (3) suffered his third successive failure of the series. While Laxman scored at a better run rate, Dravid was his usual self for the third time in the series.
Laxman took a particular liking to Mitchell's Johnson's angling delivery on his off-stump and creamed a series of cover boundaries.
Johnson went for 19 runs in one over as Laxman hit four boundaries.
So assured was Laxman that when Australian skipper Ricky Ponting packed the offside field, the elegant Hyderabad batsman regularly picked it from outside the off-stump to send balls screaming down to midwicket and long on boundaries.
Australia were unlucky when Dravid was reprieved on 15 at the total 34 for one. Dravid had edged Mitchell Johnson to slips but umpire Steve Bucknor had already stuck his hand out for a no-ball.
