Laura Bush undergoes surgery
Laura Bush underwent successful surgery on Saturday to relieve pressure on a pinched nerve in her neck.
US President George W. Bush, flying back from an Asia-Pacific summit in Sydney, telephoned his wife from his official Air Force One airplane after the two-and-a-half hour operation, spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters.
"He said she sounded very well," Perino said. "He looks forward to getting back to help her in the recovery." Laura Bush's press office had cited the pinched nerve in a statement announcing that she would not accompany the president to the Asia-Pacific Economic (APEC) forum in Australia.
On Saturday, spokeswoman Sally McDonough said the first lady "underwent a successful posterior cervical foraminotomy to relieve the pressure on the pinched nerves in her neck."
She "is resting comfortably at the White House," she said. The president was due here for a refueling stop and to meet with commanders and families of fallen US soldiers.
