Landslide kills 10, injures 15 in Saki Naka
Ten persons, including three children, were killed and 15 others injured in a landslide at Saki Naka area in suburban Andheri following heavy rains, police said.
Ten fire engines and ambulances rushed to the spot to rescue persons trapped under the debris, police said, adding the injured were rushed to the Rajawadi and Bhabha hospitals. As the lanes leading to the accident site were narrow, initially the fire brigade officials faced problems in pressing their fire engines into the service. Rescue operations are still on, Fire Brigade chief PD Kargoppikar said adding that they were unaware if anyone is still under the debris.
The deceased were identified as Yousuf Shaikh (45), Ayesha Parveen (30), Reshma Shaikh (2), Ghansu Pathak (2), Shankar Mishra (42), Malul Shahadin (50), Supriya Khatun (16), Rubina Khatun (26), Rabiya Khatun (45) and Vais Rana
(11).
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan visited the spot and announced a compensation of Rs one lakh to next of the kin of the deceased. The injured will get compensation ranging between Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000.
