Land cannot be returned, compensation can be reviewed: Basu

Ruling out Trinamool Congress' demand for return of 400 acres of land at Singur to unwilling farmers, CPI-M patriarch Jyoti Basu today said the compensation package could, instead, be restructured.

KOLKATA: Ruling out Trinamool Congress' demand for return of 400 acres of land at Singur to unwilling farmers, CPI-M patriarch Jyoti Basu today said the compensation package could, instead, be restructured.

"I do not know how the land can be returned. If that is done, how will the plant come up? The compensation package, instead, can be discussed," he told reporters here on the first day of two-day CPI-M state committee meeting.

Charging the Trinamool with trying to "sabotage" the Tata Motors small car project at Singur, he said, "The way (the Trinamool) trying to close down the plant makes it clear to the people of the state and the country that they are against progress."

On the CPI(M)-led Left Front's debacle in some areas of the state during the recent panchayat elections, he said, "It is clear that there had been a grand alliance (by the Trinamool-led opposition). Their's was an opportunistic alliance."

He said all district committees of the party had been asked to submit review reports by the first week of June. A plan of action would be made after studying the reports.

Asked whether the people have committed a mistake by voting the opposition parties in some areas, the veteran Marxist leader did not give a direct reply, saying, "we will have to campaign in a manner that those who made a mistake can rectify them. We will have to bring back those against us."

The state committee meeting, convened mainly to review the panchayat election results, will discuss the extent to which the poll results were affected by the government's land acquisition policy, negative voting by minorities and organisational shortcomings, party sources said.
