Srinagar: The head of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) in Kargil, Mohammad Jaffar Akhoon, has decided to recommend dissolution of the council, and he is likely to switch to BJP along with some National Conference councillors.

"The UT (Union Territory) administration will shortly start the delimitation of constituencies of all eight hill councils in Ladakh which will be followed by elections. In view of this, I have decided to recommend the dissolution of LAHDC (Kargil) to the UT administration," Akhoon, chairman and chief executive councillor of the LAHDC, told ET.

Akhoon, an NC leader, rebelled against the party earlier this year when he refused to step down as chief executive councillor after completing two and a half years in favour of the alliance partner Congress, as per a power-sharing arrangement. This term of the LAHDC (Kargil) will end in October 2028.

Akhoon said dissolution of the council would ensure transparency in delimitation of the constituencies as three new councils - Sankoo, Zanskar and Drass - have mostly been carved out of the Kargil Hill Council.

Akhoon was a prominent NC leader before being suspended by the party for securing a majority in the council with the support of BJP while shunning the alliance partner Congress.
