KV Thangabalu resigns as Tamil Nadu Congress President after assembly election results

TN Congress Committee president KV Thangabalu resigned on Saturday, a day after his party's tally was reduced to five from 34 in the assembly elections.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president KV Thangabalu resigned on Saturday, a day after his party’s tally was reduced to five from 34 in the assembly elections. The Congress had pressurised the DMK into giving it 63 seats. Thangabalu said he accepted “moral responsibility” for the defeat and that it would not be right to blame any one constituent for the defeat of the coalition in Tamil Nadu.

The TNCC president had filed papers from the Mylapore constituency as a dummy candidate for his wife, and then became the candidate after his wife’s candidature was rejected. He was, however, drubbed by AIADMK’s R Rajalakshmi by a margin of over 29,000 votes.
