K’taka govt says case registered against Murthy, police say no
In a new twist to the national anthem row involving Infosys chief mentor NR Narayana Murthy, the Mysore police on Friday maintained they have not filed any FIR against the former even as the Karnataka government asserted a case was registered.
A top police official in Mysore, speaking on condition of anonymity, made it clear that no FIR has been filed against Mr Murthy for his alleged remarks.
The official said two individuals had filed complaints against Mr Murthy alleging the IT icon had ‘dishonoured’ the national anthem. These complaints were registered. On their basis, inquiry and investigation were conducted and a report was sent to the government, he said, without divulging details.
State home minister MP Prakash, responding to the demand for action against Mr Murthy in the state assembly on Friday, said the police have registered a case under section 3 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971 on the basis of a complaint lodged by advocate AM Bhaskar.
“The case registered as a non-cognisable offence is under investigation,” Mr Prakash said and declared that Mr Murthy has committed an “unpardonable” offence by saying the instrumental version of the national anthem was played on April eight at a function attended by President APJ Abdul Kalam at the Mysore Infosys campus to avoid embarrassment to foreigners.
