Krishnadas’ party can see it only through anti-US prism

As Mumbai continued to reel under the worst terror attack to hit the country, the CPM was training its guns at the Manmohan Singh government for toeing US line on Islamic terrorism. CPM said terrorism and internal security situation within were repercussions of such a stand.

An editorial in Peoples Democracy, whose publication coincided with the terror attack in Mumbai, sought a change in Indias Afghan policy which it alleged was being seen through the prism of US-India-Israel axis.

The party also said that it was short-sighted of India to comply with American interference and violations of Pakistans sovereignty.

From Syria to Afghanistan, Indias policy of aligning with US-Israeli interests has inflicted major damage to Indias image. The unthinking acceptance of US designs in the war against Islamic terrorism will cost India heavily, just as Pakistan is paying a heavy price for it.

The internal security situation and the problem of terrorism within are directly impacted by the repercussions of such a stance, the editorial said.

Accusing the UPA government of not expressing regret when civilians are massacred in Afghanistan, CPM said this was in line with strategic partnership with the US. India has become increasingly involved in supporting Karzai government and the USNATO project.

Earlier when the US launched its war on terror after 9/11, the Indian establishment saw an opportunity to weaken Pakistans links with Afghanistan by its increasing involvement with US approval. The US has now extended its military operations into Pakistani territory, the CPM said.

Further, the CPM said that with Barack Obama assuming presidency, more American troops were likely to be deployed in Afghanistan. Asking New Delhi to wake up to the deadend Afghanistan was reaching, CPM recalled that India had co-operated with Russia and Iran to support the Northern Alliance after the Taliban took over in 1996.

The Manmohan Singh governments obsession with the strategic alliance with the US has precluded any working with Russia, Iran and the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation to broaden the international and regional effort to tackle the Afghanistan situation, the editorials.
