Kolkata civic body to 'discourage' sale of colas

KOLKATA: With the Left government in West Bengal yet to act on the cola controversy, the CPI-M- controlled Kolkata Municipal Corporation today asked educational institutions, hospitals and public canteens to discourage the sale of soft drinks.
"We don't have the power to ban colas in our city but we have taken the decision to discourage their consumption considering their harmful effects on humans," Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya told reporters.
He said in view of the reports about high pesticide contents in colas, civic authorities have issued circulars to schools, colleges, hospitals and public canteens to discourage the sale of soft drinks.
Bhattacharya said since the Corporation did not have the means to analyse colas sold in the state, samples had been sent to the Chemical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University for tests.
The Corporation will launch a public awareness programme against colas by distributing leaflets in the city, he said.
