The Congress emerged as the single-largest party in the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation as votes were counted on Friday for the 81-member civic body. However, the ruling Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP together secured a clear majority with a combined tally of 45 seats.

Kolhapur Civic Polls 2026: Seat-sharing

Within the Mahayuti, the BJP contested 36 seats, Shiv Sena fought 30, and the NCP entered the race in six wards. On the other side, the MVA largely relied on the Congress, which contested 75 seats, while Shiv Sena (UBT) fielded candidates in the remaining six wards.

The seat distribution reflects the different strategies adopted by both alliances to maximise their chances in the civic polls.

Voting for the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation was held on Thursday, along with elections to 28 other civic bodies across Maharashtra. The results are being closely tracked as they are seen as an important test of ground-level strength ahead of future political battles in the state.

Mumbai BMC in BJP’s sight

Beyond Kolhapur, the BJP is also poised to secure the mayor’s post in Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Along with its ally Shiv Sena, the party is on track to register its highest-ever tally in the country’s most powerful civic body.

For 27 years, the BMC was controlled by the undivided Shiv Sena, until the party split in 2022 into factions led by Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray. The original party was founded in 1966 by Bal Thackeray.
