Kidney kingpin Amit Kumar held at Nepali forest resort
Dr Amit Kumar, the man accused of being the ring leader of the multi-crore kidney racket in Gurgaon, was arrested in Kathmandu on Thursday evening.
Dr Kumar was picked up from a jungle resort “in the southern town of Sauraha, about 60 km away from the Indian border town of Raxaul,” according to the website.
Police sources were quoted as saying, “Dr Kumar and his Nepali associate Manish Singh checked into Hotel Wildlife Camp, around 10 am this morning, under Singh’s name.” Later they asked for a copy of the newspaper, “which had front-paged a report on the kidney racket and about the presence of the main accused in Nepal. The sources said that Dr Kumar cut out the story before returning the newspaper. Eyewitnesses said Dr Kumar sported a hat and sunglasses,” according to the newspaper’s website
Later in the day, the resort’s receptionist identified Dr Kumar when a police team, trying to trace the fugitive, showed a picture of his. But , Dr Kumar’s associate Manish Singh fled the scene even before the police could nab him.
The police, however, managed to nab Dr Kumar, who did not resist being handcuffed, according to the website. “Indian embassy officials here in Kathmandu denied any knowledge about the arrest. They pointed out that in normal course the Nepali authorities have to inform the mission about the arrest of any Indian national,” the website added.
It also said that senior police superintendent Upendra Kanth Aryal would only confirm that an Indian national was arrested from Sauraha but “positive identification could be made only after the arrested person is interrogated.”
