NEW DELHI: A total of 1,57,717 cases of kidnapping and abduction were reported across the country in last three years and the numbers have shown a rising trend, Rajya Sabha was informed today.

"As per data available for 2011, 2012 and 2013, a total of 44,664 cases, 47,592 cases and 65,461 cases respectively were reported in the country under kidnapping and abduction, showing a rising trend," Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said replying a written question.

The Minister said the state governments are primarily responsible for prevention, detection, registration and investigation of crime and for prosecuting the criminals through the law enforcement agencies.

"The Union Government, however, attaches the highest importance to the matter of prevention of crime and, therefore, has continued to urge the state governments and Union Territories to give more focused attention towards improving the administration of the criminal justice system and taking such measures as are necessary for prevention and control of crime," he said.
