Khurshid to Muslims: Create awareness of backwardness

Salman Khurshid has said the condition of Indian Muslims could be worse than what was recorded by the Sachar and Ranganath Mishra commissions.

NEW DELHI: Union Minister For Minority Affairs Salman Khurshid has said the condition of Indian Muslims could be worse than what was recorded by the Sachar and Ranganath Mishra commissions.

Speaking at a function, he said there was lack of awareness among Muslims on its problems and they had to be urgently made aware about the community’s socio-economic backwardness.“We need to go beyond the Sachar and Mishra Commission reports because I am afraid the situation is worse than what these two reports have shown,” Khurshid said.

The minister and Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha K Rahman Khan, who was also present at the function, presented awards to RTI activist Afroz Alam Sahil and Bihar Anjuman, an on-line group of Bihari diaspora active in the field of education.

Khan said, “Mr Sahil has presented the community with a brilliant example by using RTI, instead of complaining about its failures.” Sahil has filed several RTI application relevant to the minority community.
