NEW DELHI: With an independent MLA pledging his support to the BJP, Uttarakhand governor Sudershan Aggarwal on Friday invited former Union minister BC Khanduri to form the next government in the state.
Maj Gen (retd) Khanduri, who’ll be sworn in as the state’s fourth chief minister on March 6, has been asked to prove his majority on the floor of the Uttarakhand Assembly by March 20.
The BJP, which returns to power in the hill state after a gap of five years, should have a smooth sailing, as it has already secured the formal backing of Rajendra Singh Bhandari, the newly-elected independent legislator from Nandprayag. The three-member Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), too, has decided to offer its “in-principle” support to the saffron outfit.
In the 70-member assembly, the BJP stopped just short of the half-way mark, winning 34 seats. While the Congress came a distant second with 21 seats, the BSP romped home in as many as eight constituencies.
