'Kerala yet to receive reply from Centre on Mullaperiyar'

The Centre was yet to respond to Kerala Government's request for intervention in resolving the dispute with Tamil Nadu over Mullaperiyar Dam, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre was yet to respond to Kerala Government's request for intervention in resolving the dispute with Tamil Nadu over Mullaperiyar Dam, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said on Wednesday.

The state government had so far not received any reply from the Centre to its request, he told reporters here.

However, the Kerala cabinet had recently decided to go ahead with the construction of a new dam across Mullaperiyar as an alternative to the present one with a view to ensuring the safety of people living downstream. Tamil Nadu has however objected to the proposal.

The state has recently sought the Centre's intervention in the matter in the wake of an expert committee report pointing out 'safety concerns' about the more than 100-year old Mullaperiyar Dam in Iddukki District.

The dispute is over increasing the storage level from the existing 136 feet to 142 feet.

Kerala wanted to maintain the water level at the existing level considering the safety of the dam, while Tamil Nadu has been insisting on raising the water level to increase the availability of water for irrigation in Madurai District.
