Kerala to move Supreme Court if Tamil Nadu does not cooperate in water release

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government today said it would move the Supreme Court if Tamil Nadu does not cooperate in ensuring it receives its due share of water as per Parambikulam Aliyar water sharing agreement.
"However, unofficial information indicates Tamil Nadu has adopted a softer line and started releasing water. I am ready to go to that state to discuss the issue," Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said in the assembly

It was very important for Kerala to get its due share under the PAP in view of the drought situation in the state, he said while replying to a submission of K Achuthan (Cong), who said the state was entitled to receive 4 TMC.

The cabinet had yesterday discussed the drought situation and decided to approach the Supreme Court to get Kerala's due share of water under the PAP.

The entire state was declared drought effected and Kerala sought financial aid from Centre to take up relief measures.

Achuthan pointed out that paddy cultivation in about 20,000 heactares in Palakkad district was on the verge of being destroyed due to drought and as such, getting water from Tamil Nadu under the PAP was very vital.
