Kerala in favour of dam at Mullaperiyar: Minister

Kerala has clarified that it is proposing a new dam at Mullaperiyar on grounds of apprehension about safety of existing dam.

CHENNAI: Kerala water resources minister PJ Joseph has clarified in the state assembly today that the state was in favour of a new dam at Mullaperiyar on the Kerala-TN border, because of apprehension about the safety of the existing dam.

The minister has requested the Tamil Nadu government to take a humanitarian view of the proposal for a new dam, pointing out that the lives of about 3 million people will be in danger on account of the
existing dam which is more than a century old.

Joseph said Kerala was willing to hold talks with Tamil Nadu regarding the issue for an amicable solution. Tamil Nadu’s reaction on the new development is awaited.
