THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala government would take all steps to protect the Scheduled Tribe students who got admission to MBBS courses last year in the wake of a government order stating that regulations of Medical Council of India (MCI) were not applicable in their case, state Minister for Backward and Scheduled Communities A K Balan said

More than 30 students are facing disqualification by the MCI for getting admission through the government order stipulating that even those who scored less than 50 percent marks in the category were eligible for admission.

The students admitted to different private medical colleges were far behind others in the merit list prepared by the office of the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations.

Balan told reporters here today that students were allowed to be admitted as per a decision of the cabinet.

He said the MCI has now asked the government to examine the issue and take necessary steps and the government was exploring possibilities to protect the students who had already got admission, he said.
