Kerala govt ousts NCP from coalition
The ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala on Monday expelled the Nationalist Congress Party from the coalition, putting K Karunakaran and his supporters out in the political wilderness once again.
LDF convenor Vaikom Viswan said the decision to expel NCP from the front was unanimous and that the move was in the light of the “changed political climate” after DIC(K)’s merger with NCP.
The CPI and the RSP had all along objected to the inclusion of Mr Karunakaran and his followers in the Left camp, and chief minister V S Achuthanandan had also held a similar viewpoint.
The NCP has two MLAs in the assembly, and the ruling LDF which has 98 seats in the 140-member house will not find the reduction of their strength in the assembly by two MLAs pinching.
NCP state president K Muraleedharan said his party was not under any pressure to take an immediate decision in view of its ouster from the LDF. The ouster is also considered a victory for chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan since he supported the move, as against CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan who was seen to have a soft corner for Mr Karunakaran’s outfit.
