Kerala floods live: Worst flood in a century kills 67; Kochi airport closed till Saturday

The worst flood in the century has killed at least 67 people in Kerala and displaced thousands of people, while road, air and train services have been disrupted due to flooding, landslides, house and road bridge collapses. The Kochi airport has been shut down until Saturday afternoon due to continuous rain and rising water level at several dams across the state.

The five latest fatalities that began a week ago came when authorities in the southern state were forced to release water from 35 dangerously full dams, sending a surge into its main river.

* CM Pinarayi Vijayan called an urgent meeting at the Secretariat and decided to seek permission from the Centre to allow small aircraft to land at the naval airport in Kochi

* The govt also plans to request the Union ministry of civil aviation to utilise the other two airports in the state - Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram - instead of reverting the flights to Mumbai and other places

* Kannur university cancels all examinations scheduled for August 16, new date to be announced later

* Rain and floods have destroyed and damaged hundreds of houses in the past week and caused significant losses to crops in the state known for its spices and coffee.
