Kerala asks centre to revise BPL norms

The norms fixed by the Planning Commission to determine the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families were not acceptable to Kerala, state Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran told the state assembly on Tuesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The norms fixed by the Planning Commission to determine the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families were not acceptable to Kerala, state Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran told the state assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to a supplmentary on the problems faced in identifying the BPL families for concessions under the Public Distribution System (PDS), he said Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan himself had taken up the issue with the Centre.

Considering the soci-economic profile of Kerala, the revised norms were not acceptable to the state, he said.

The state-run SUPPLYCO had worked out a scheme for directly purchasing food grains, pulses and other essential goods from the production centres outside the state.

The Department had identified the places in states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The orders would be placed by inviting tenders, he said.

Plans were afoot to modernise and improve the service of the sales outlets of SUPPLYCO since they were facing challenges from private supermarkets, he said.
