Kerala announces tax concessions

Kerala Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac on Wednesday announced a reduction in luxury tax imposed on hotels, house boats and cable TV operators in the budget for the year 2006-07.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac on Wednesday announced a reduction in luxury tax imposed on hotels, house boats and cable TV operators in the budget for the year 2006-07.
Luxury tax for cable TV operators had been brought down to Rs five for a connection per month instead of the five per cent announced in the budget, the minister said while replying to the debate on the Finance Bill presented in the assembly.
Hotels with room tariff upto Rs 150 per day would be exempted from tax. Tax for rooms with tariff from Rs 150 to Rs 499 had been fixed at 10 per cent and for Rs 500 and above at 15 per cent.
To a give a boost to tourism, house boats in Alappuzha district had been exempted from luxury tax for a year. Luxury tax on house boats in other districts had been reduced by 50 per cent, the minister said.
It was proposed to remove items like dried ginger, tender arecanut, chicken and rubber products except tread rubber from notified goods list. It was also decided to do away with agricultural income tax as a temporary measure.
Weigh bridges would be allowed to be set up at check posts under BOOT (build, operate, own, transfer) basis and the rate of service would be fixed by the government.
Tax on petroleum bitumen, cement paints and bathroom fittings had been reduced from 20 per cent to 12.5 per cent.
The House later referred the Finance Bill to the Subject Committee.
