Katara case: Police files chargesheet

Delhi Police files chargesheet in the human trafficking case involving suspended BJP MP Babubhai Katara.

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Monday filed the chargesheet in a court here in the human trafficking case involving suspended BJP MP Babubhai Katara and five others who may face a maximum imprisonment for life if convicted.

"I take cognizance of the chargesheet filed today in the court under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code," Additional Chief Metropoate Kamini Lau said.

If convicted for forgery charges, Katara and his five accomplices face a maximum imprisonment for life.

In the chargesheet, filed 88 days after his arrest at IGI Airport here, the investigators found sufficient evidence againsve others to invoke a stringent Section 467 of IPC, which pertains to forgery of valuable security, will, etc.

Apart from Section 467, the police has charged the six accused under several other provisions, including Sections 420 (cheating), 471 (using forged documents as genuine) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of th Meanwhile, the court allowed parole of the MP for July 19 and August 10 to enable him to cast his vote in the Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections respectively while dismissing his interim bail plea.

Katara was arrested with co-accused Paramjeet Kaur and a 15-year-old boy from an airport here on April 18 while attempting to take them to Toronto in Canada on the diplomatic passports of his wife and son.

Subsequently, other accused Rajendra Kumar Gumpa, Kiran Dhar, Sunder Lal Yadav, travel agents Satwant and Mohammed Rasheed-- were arrested for theiplicity in the offence.
