A century-old Kashmir silk factory lying defunct since 1989 has reopened again. The silk factory, one of the oldest in Kashmir, was set up in 1897 with the help of Sir Thomas Wardle, president of the Silk Association of Great Britain.

Closed due to losses
The factory, situated at Solina, had shut down owing to decreased production and huge losses.

Taking the silk route again
At the moment, a dozen workers are employed in the factory. The factory reopened last month.

Hope for cocoon-rearers
The reopening of the factory has brough cheer to nearly 50,000 cocoon-producing farmers in the Valley, who will be the direct beneficiaries.

The factory's resurrection is also part of government's plan to boost silk production in the state. The government also plan to impart training on skill development for the project.
