Kashmir solution must for peace in Afghanistan, says France

French Foreign Office spokesperson Eric Chevallier has said that a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute could pave the way for a better security situation in Afghanistan.

PARIS: French Foreign Office spokesperson Eric Chevallier has said that a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute could pave the way for a better security situation in Afghanistan.

He said that once Pakistan was made free of tensions over its borders with India, it would be able concentrate more on security issues with Kabul.

"If Pakistan is free of the tensions on its eastern border it shares with India, then Islamabad can concentrate more on security issues that dog its western border which straddles with Afghanistan," the Daily Times quoted Chevallier as saying while talking to a group of visiting journalists.

Chevallier further said the renewed international interest in solving the Kashmir dispute 'makes sense', and added: "Resolving the Kashmir dispute will help everybody in the region."
