Chennai: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Sunday said he was "shattered" and was "writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow" after the stampede that took place at his rally in Karur on the previous evening.

"No matter who offers words of comfort, the loss of our loved ones is unbearable. Yet, as a member of your family, I intend to provide ₹20 lakh to each family that has lost a loved one and ₹2 lakh to those who are injured and receiving treatment. This amount is, of course, not significant in the face of such a loss. Still, at this moment, it is my duty as one who belongs to your family to stand by you, my dear ones, with a heavy heart," the actor-politician said on X.

Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Sunday said that he would not make any political comment on the Karur stampede and that further action would be based on the findings of the inquiry commission, headed by former high court judge Aruna Jagadeesan.

The Union home ministry has sought a detailed report from the state government on the stampede. Amit Shah spoke with Stalin and governor RN Ravi to review the situation and also assured of assistance.Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹2 lakh each for the families of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 each for those injured in the stampede.

Meanwhile, BJP leader K Annamalai squarely blamed the ruling DMK government for its "gross negligence" in managing crowd safety at the high-profile rally. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami too slammed police lapses and the inexperience of TVK for the Karur stampede.
