CHENNAI: Taking a dig at his arch rival and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for being pulled up by Election Commission of India on the isse of violation of model code of conduct, DMK president M Karunanidhi today said she would have demanded his resignation if a similar thing happened during his party rule.

"What would have Jayalalithaa done if such an incident had happened during DMK rule? Wouldnt she have strongly demanded for resignation of Karunanidhi (himself)?" he said.

In a letter to partymen in DMK mouthpiece 'Murasoli' Karunanidhi said that he however did not intend to make any such demand, but claimed that people wondered if she would abide by her "conscience" after the EC reprimand.

"The question in people's hearts is whether she will respect conscience (and) will act (accordingly) after accepting the warnings," he said.

Rejecting Jayalalithaa's defence on Model Code of Conduct violation during her poll campaign in Yercaud (SC) constituency recently, EC had on Friday advised her to be careful in future and not announce new schemes during elections to lure voters.
