NEW DELHI: A dayafter the Kerala veteran K Karunakaran told the CWC meeting that the Congress should strengthen its grassroots base by reviving the tradition of staying connected with the people through launching mass-contact programmes on a regular basis, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi met him here for a one-on-one discussion.

Mr Gandhi drove down to the Kerala House on Sunday evening and held a meeting with Mr Karunakaran for about 45 minutes. Mr Karunakaran was here to attend the CWC meeting for the first time since his return to the Congress after a couple of years estrangement with the party.

While refusing to divulge the details of his meeting with Mr Gandhi, the four-time former chief minister of Kerala said, he told the AICC general secretary that there was a need for the Congress to strengthen its organisational network work by launching constant door-to-door campaign by taking up peoples causes across the country.

Maintaining that he had a very cordial and useful meeting with Mr Gandhi, the 92-year-old Kerala leader who has been a close ally of the Gandhi family since the days of Indira Gandhi, said he was confident that the Congress will bounce back to its original glory by successfully meeting the present challenges.

Mr Rahul Gandhi and me discussed various aspects of politics and the ways to straighten the Congress organisation across the country, he told ET.

Mr Gandhi has also accepted Mr Karunakarans invitation to visit Kerala. Earlier in the day, Mr Karunakaran held discussions with AICC general secretary in-charge of the state, Mohsina Kidwai about the ways to ensure organisational posts in the PCC and DCCs for his supporters who rejoined the Congress along with him.
