Karunakaran at it again, says Chandy incapable leader
A fresh factional squabble has broken out in the Kerala unit of the Congress with veteran party leader K Karunakaran charging the state unit leadership with being ineffective.
Mr Karunakaran, who hit out at Oommen Chandy for his inability to take on the Left government on important issues, said there was a need for immediate correctives.
Mr Karunakaran and his son K Muraleedharan had walked out of the Congress party and formed the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran in 2005. However, they found the going tough and merged the party with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) a year later.
The infighting is bad news for the Congress as the coming Lok Sabha polls in the state is seen tailor-made for the party. With the LDF government unable to conduct governance in an orderly fashion, there is considerable anger among the public against the Left. To add to this, the CPM is a divided house with its dominant faction sparing no opportunity to undermine the authority of CM VS Achuthanandan.
The Left had won 19 of the 20 Lok Sabha seats from the state. Incidentally, feud in the Congress had contributed to the record victory ofthe Leftists.
Mr Karunakarans outburst is not surprising as he has been desperately trying to bring his son, Muraleedharan, back into the reckoning. At the press conference where he hit out at the state unit leadership, Mr Karunakaran said that his son was a crowd puller and that the NCP should be accommodated in the UDF. The state unit has been opposing the NCPs entry into the Congress led alliance.
Spokesman of the state unit of the Congress MM Hassan refuted the charges made by Mr Karunakaran. Maybe what he said about the party is his personal opinion. The functioning of the Congress party is fine and perfect and there is no problem in the way it is being run now, said Mr Hassan.
