BANGALORE: Seeking to douse the flames allegedly ignited by Bajrang Dal and other pro-Hindu outfits, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has ordered an inquiry by corps of detectives (COD).

The chief minister, who took the unusual decision of personally briefing media after a meeting of the state cabinet, said COD will be asked to submit the report within two months into all aspects of the communal clashes and promised to repair damaged churches and places of worship at government���s cost.

He said the police have been directed to ensure 24-hour patrolling in all the places affected by communal tension and provide security to the minority community���s places of worship. In addition, police have been asked to make preventive arrests of all suspected anti-social elements as part of the government���s resolve to maintain law and order situation as well as peace and harmony.

He side-stepped a question on whether Bajrang Dal state convenor Mahendra Kumar, who had publicly admitted his outfit���s role in the attacks and vowed to continue them, would be arrested. The government wants to ``ensure an impartial inquiry and book the culprits,������ he said disclosing that over 200 persons have already been arrested.

He, however, ruled out a judicial probe by a sitting high court judge as demanded by opposition parties contending that he had full faith in the state police.

``I am a chief minister for all the six crore Kannadigas. Our government is committed provide protection to life and properties of all sections, especially minorities and weaker sections,������ he said making it that ``nobody should nor would be allowed to take law into their own hands.

If anybody has any complaint regarding forcible conversions or publication of offensive or derogrative literature, they should approach the police and the government.������ Yeddyurappa blamed the opposition Congress and JD(S) parties for ``trying to fish in troubled waters������ in order to destabilise and tarnish the government.

``There is a systematic and organised conspiracy to disturb peace and tranquility in the state and make use of the communal disturbances for political gain,������ he said promising to put down such efforts with a heavy hand.

To a question on former Congress chief minister Veerappa Moily���s charge that home minister Dr V S Acharya was directly responsible for the situation, Yeddyurappa retorted: ``It is height of irresponsibility to make such baseless charges.

Dr Acharya has been camping in the region since the trouble broke out and returned to Bangalore this morning.

The government has taken all possible steps to contain the situation and restore normalcy,������ he said pointing out that he had personally visited Mangalore and other places along with the district in-charge ministers and senior officials to review the situation.
