Three time MLA from Kundagol constituency, Shivalli was interacting with people when he complained of chest pain and collapsed. He was first taken to KIMS Hospital and was later shifted to a private hospital where Shivalli breathed his last. He is survived by wife and three children.
Shivalli’s political career began in 1996 with him joining the Congress. However, his first victory in the assembly election was an independent candidate in 1999. Thereafter he was elected twice from the Congress - in 2013 and 2018. He was given the portfolio during the cabinet reshuffle of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in last December.
For the last three days, Shivalli was busy monitoring the rescue operation at the site of building in collapse in Dharwad. The collapse of the under construction building has claimed 15 lives.
Within weeks of taking charge as the minister, Shivalli had said that he would take industrial development on a priority in Dharwad district. “Industrial development is the solution to unemployment problem in the district,” he had said.
Political fraternity of Karnataka has expressed condolences. “Demise of C S Shivalli has shocked me. He was a people-friendly leader. May the God give his family the strength to face the ordeal,” Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy tweeted.
The MLA’s mortal remains is kept for public viewing today. It will be then taken to his birthplace Yaraguppi village for the last rites to be held on Saturday.
