Karnataka independents submit application for hearing of case today

BANGALORE: Five disqualified independent rebel MLAs today moved the Karnataka High Court seeking early hearing on their plea challenging their ouster from the state Assembly and pleaded for restoration of voting rights for tomorrow's confidence vote.

The counsel for the five independents, K G Raghavan, said the advanced application had been submitted today to Registrar, Krishna Bhat, to enable the independent MLAs to participate in the floor test tomorrow.

Everything would depend on whether the High Court, which is closed for vacation, agrees to take up the matter today, he said.

The Registrar is expected to submit the application to Chief Justice J S Khehar at his residence later in the day.

Speaker K G Bopaiah had disqualified the five independents, along with 11 dissident BJP MLAs, hours before the vote of confidence on October 11.

The bench yesterday adjourned the hearing of the petition filed by five disqualified independents to October 18 after their counsel sought time to amend the petition in the wake of discrepancies pointed out by government advocates.

The court had reserved till Monday orders on the petition of 11 BJP MLAs.
